Unable to find Rosemary, Nadja writes to Headmistress Applefield for help when José drops by with a bouquet; after Nadja finishes and mails her letter, José explains that he was the protegé of a matador, Manolo, when Carmen arrived. Nadja suggests that Carmen needs more flamenco lessons, and José complains that Carmen is high-maintenance and has lost much of her stamina; he ends their engagement, deciding to travel.
