Synopsis
All things have a name by which they are defined. Amongst the named are the many long-forgotten gods that dwell within the world brought about by the prayers, fears and desires of humanity. In the famine stricken and riot plagued city of Edo, alarming events are visited upon the populace by these otherworldly beasts. Descending from the mountain tops or rising from the earth are these old gods, the Youi. For nearly twenty-five years Yukiatsu Ryuudou has wandered the country-sides of Japan posing as a bodyguard, living the life of a gambler and thief, all the while denying his name. Through a chance encounter with a Youi and the members of the Office of Barbarian Knowledge Enforcement, Yukiatsu is forced to face the life he's been running from and rediscover his long hidden power of Ayagami, the ability to find true names and use them as a weapon to exorcise these beasts plaguing the material world.

Episode 1
The Youi Cometh
Edo, Tenpo Year 14. The Ayashi of the Office of Barbarian Knowledge Enforcement secretly investigate the existence of a Youi. Yukiatsu Ryudo encounters a mother and son and gives them refuge, but the Other World appears and a giant Youi comes forth.

Episode 2
After the Fall of the Mountain God
Mixed up in the fight between the two Youi from the Other World, Yukiatsu, Tae, and Outa are taken to Hozaburo’s estate. But the Youi Yamago appears at the estate and Outa disappears during the commotion. Yukiatsu heads into town to search for him.

Episode 3
The Undercurrents of Beautiful Edo
Guided by the Ayashi, Yukiatsu enters the headquarters of the Office of Barbarian Knowledge Enforcement. There, the Ayashi once again urge Yukiatsu to join them. Around that time, a Youi of armor was making appearances all over Edo.

Life-Size Dolls
After a rash of mysterious disappearances, the Ayashi mobilize to investigate. Yukiatsu runs into Atl, a foreign girl hiding her identity, performing with a horse named Yukiwa. The Ayashi suspect Atl while Yukiatsu tries desperately to protect her.

Episode 5
The Tale of a Murder
Yukiatsu defeats the Youi that had possessed the life-size dolls, but Atl’s horse, Yukiwa, is captured. Meanwhile, Oshino visits Ogasawara’s estate, saying she is an old acquaintance of Yukiatsu’s and wants to report a crime he committed 15 years earlier.

Racing Dragon Aura
Yukiatsu regains his memory of the crime he committed 15 years ago. Atl’s horse is being held captive by Yozo Torii. Yukiwa goes berserk when exposed to Youi blood and Atl attempts to sacrifice herself to calm him. Yukiatsu tries to stop this, but…

The Dragon is Within the Cloud
The Ayashi array themselves against Yukiwa to calm him as he rages about. Yukiatsu tries to draw out Ayagami from Yukiwa, but is helpless against the coldness that he unleashes. Atl works desperately to protect Yukiwa from the Ayashi’s attacks.

Fox Theater
A person disappears in the theatre town, leaving just a mask behind. While investigating, the Ayashi are surrounded by luminous golden foxes. They make it out with Yukiatsu’s powers, but Saizo refuses his help and insists she will solve the case alone.

Front and Back
Yukiatsu and the others arrive to rescue Saizo and find her surrounded by foxes, already possessed by the mask Youi. Leaping outside, Saizo’s dancing awakens the spirits in Edo. Ogasawara makes the decision to dispose of Saizo, though Yukiatsu refuses…

A Maiden's Dance, Fragrance of Spring Flowers
Saizo heads for the theatre town, still possessed by the mask Youi. Yukiatsu tries to draw out Ayagami from Saizo but she refuses, fearful of having the meaning of her name revealed. Saizo claims she is a wrongdoer, and her hidden past comes to light.

Nikko Fey Road
Yukiatsu departs for Nikko with Ogasawara, but their way is overrun with Youi. Honjo and his group also move to destroy Youi. Ogasawara’s old friend, Kanou follows Honjo, waiting for a chance to exact his revenge. Ogasawara tries to stop Kanou, but…

Hakuryu Howls To the Moon
Honjo and the others come across stone said to possess strange powers, but it’s stolen by a mysterious group, the Western Ones, who raise an enormous Youi. Yukiatsu fights using Ayagami, but is no match. Meanwhile, Ogasawara faces his old friend, Kanou.

Heaven, Hell, and a Book of Rumors
Atl is hiding in a courtesan house where a young artist, Kyousai Kawanabe, is being attended. After walking with police hand Tamahei, Kyousai becomes interested in the Ayashi. He is dazzled by Atl’s beauty, who is suspected to be involved with the group.

Butterfly Dance
In Yoshiwara of Edo, someone is killing courtesans. Kyousai is a suspect and Atl is captured as his accomplice. Yukiatsu rushes to rescue Atl. They discover a new victim, and Kyousai realizes every murdered courtesan used to have a butterfly tattoo…

Woman of Rashomon Alley
There’s a serial murderer in Yoshiwara. The Ayashi investigate the butterfly tattoos that have disappeared from the bodies. Honjo and Torii’s other subordinates plot to capture Atl, who is framed for the murders. Kyousai declares that he will save Atl.

People of Craft
Someone has made an attempt on the life of Finance Magistrate Yoshisuke Atobe. Similarly, ruffians who hate Western Learning appeared at a medicine wholesaler called Yamazakiya. Suspecting the two events are related, the Ayashi set out to investigate.

The Shrouded World
Masurao says he sold weapons called “air guns”, which produce no loud sounds or the smell of gunpowder, to Yamazakiya. Learning that his elder sister, Ninai, is at Yamazakiya’s, Abi rushes over where he comes face to face with her.

Wanderer's Paradise
A Youi, Ougu, appears and Yukiatsu fails to draw out its Ayagami. Ougu disappears into the Other World with Nina, leaving their child, Ruido, behind. The Ayashi hide him at Ogasawara’s estate, but are attacked by Narikawa’s underlings.

Three Yukiatsus
A man claiming to be Yukiatsu Ryudo appears in the city of Edo. Ogasawara decides they will visit Yukiatsu’s childhood home to investigate the imposter‘s true identity. But having forsaken his home 25 years ago, Yukiatsu cannot bring himself to go back.

Shinobazu Pond Lullaby
Yukiatsu is reunited with his mother, who urges him to return to the House and take the place of the missing adopted son. Ogasawara persuades Yukiatsu to accept this proposal. The other Ayashi try to capture the boy claiming to be Yukiatsu Ryudo.

To Perish in the Starlit Night
A Youi heads for Edo and turns young maidens into monsters, one after another. The Ayashi mobilize to capture it, using Saizo and Atl as bait. But Yozo Torii was trying to cover up the existence of “the Western Ones”, who are behind this incident.

The Drunk Who Does Not Come Home
Well water has been turned into sake and the Ayashi mobilize. The cause is a water Youi in Edo’s aqueducts, but it is hard to track, as it has burrowed underground. Meanwhile, Atl meets a warrior sentenced to die and tries to lead him to the Other World.

Inba Swamp Construction Along the Old Canal
A succession of accidents occurs during construction at Inba Swamp. It is rumored to be the work of a fiend called a black goblin. A youth named Tasaku comes to Edo to get the construction halted. Yukiatsu encounters a Youi that turns people into toads.

Fantasy of the Latter Southern Court
Atl summons a gigantic Youi named Giei from the Other World. Its appearance causes the Inba Swamp to be swallowed up by an avalanche of debris. The Western Ones appear before the Ayashi amidst this chaos. Using talismans, they can manipulate Youi at will.

People Are Ayashi
The Western Ones enter Maejima Temple to bring about the fall of Edo Castle. Ogasawara returns to the Office of Barbarian Knowledge Enforcement with Yozo Torii. The Western Ones summon a centipede Youi from the Temple’s underground water veins.
